Black Canadian Scholarship Fund (BCSF) Golf Tournament

Every year the BCSF hosts a golf tournament which began over 20 years ago by Mr. Keith Charles (deceased) and has become a fixture of the Ottawa golf season.

The tournament provides you with an excellent opportunity to help young black men and women fulfill their dreams of pursuing higher learning while enjoying a day on the links.

In 2022 the tournament was renamed to the Keith Charles BCSF golf tournament in honour of his dedication to the fund.

About

The Black Canadian Scholarship Fund (BCSF) was founded on May 01st, 1996 when Dr. Horace Alexis, a family physician, donated the initial capital of $5,000. Together with Pat Holas, he signed an agreement with the Ottawa Community Foundation and started the Donors Committee.

Mission

The BCSF Mission is to ensure community development by supporting future leaders. To provide opportunities for qualified black students to achieve their highest academic potential. To encourage academic excellence among black students in their chosen fields of study. We have proven that small can become big.

Our record is impressive

As of 2025 we have awarded scholarships & bursaries totalling $467,000 to 79 students who have either completed or are currently pursuing undergraduate studies at Ontario and Quebec universities; students who follow a wide range of doctrines as indicated here: – Biochemistry, Engineering, Information Technology, Physiology, Journalism, Criminology and Law.

The dream has finally become a reality; financially challenged but academically able black students now have an opportunity to attend university thanks to the Black Canadian Scholarship Fund. I would like to congratulate all past and present members who have served on the committee as well as our precious volunteers and supporters who have worked so hard. Our initiative makes us all winners.

– Horace C. Alexis, M.D.
